Compassion Play: The Untold Story of the Gulf War

Performances of the Compassion Play

In 1990, in the aftermaths of Gulf War I, during the Passion “season”, a Compassion Play was written and recited on Easter morning at the foot of the Pieta Statue off Monument Square in Concord Center.

An Iraqi mother holds her dead son — not a combatant but medic — in her arms. Her words weave into melody into silence, back and forth, as she speaks with her son and American audience about the significance of the age-old feud that has all but destroyed her land, the cradle of civilization.

Fifty days later, the play was enacted on Pentecost eve. Its time has come, as we seek Truth & Reconciliation, healing, to be reenacted before the Pieta Statue and to journey out unto our land.
