The Center’s “Village University” offers itself as an off-campus laboratory, seed-bed or incubator for the cultivation — in the Concord Spirit — of not so much a physical, natural, social, or cognitive scientific perspective on the problems-challengesopportunities facing humankind today, but a spiritual scientificperspective. In Emerson’s words: a reasoned faith or faithful reason. More simply stated still: an enlightened common sense, we would suggest.

For those who aspire toward more reflective moments, amidst our quickening modern pace, this spirited angle of vision is offered to Daniel McKanan < Letter to Dan McKanan > , a friend, colleague, and the Senior Lecturer in Divinity, Ralph Waldo Emerson Unitarian Universalist Association at Harvard’s Divinity School — and through Daniel to his fellow “divines” at the Divinity School, to Harvard University, to The Unitarian-Universalist Association, and to American Religion and Academia “to boot.” The angle of vision is offered on behalf of Henry David Thoreau, Ralph Waldo Emerson, their kindred Concord Authors, as well as on behalf of those fellow citizens, who are seeking to keep alive the holy flame of the heart, to translate Transcendentalism into a language for our modern times.

This fully-realized science of the spirit builds not only on the lives and labors of Thoreau and the Concordians noted, but on those of their forbears, going back to Ben Franklin and further still to the Peace Maker himself.

Such a discipline, fully-realized science, would reunite the “letter of the word” with its informing Spirit.

“I, Eye, Aye!”

(Ralph Waldo Emerson)
